Sudden closure leads to track racing cancellations

The announcement that The National Cycling Centre will be closed for maintenance during the peak autumn racing season in October will decimate the event calendars of Manchester Regional Track League and other league organisers.

Whilst we welcome the improvement works which will benefit all users of the facility in the long term, the timing of the closure combined with the lack of consultation and poor communication with established event organisers is extremely disappointing.

Therefore, despite The National Cycling Centre previously accepting and confirming all of our dates for the autumn season, we must now inform you that our events scheduled for Friday 17th and Friday 24th October 2025 can no longer take place.

We regret this disruption to our programme of racing and the inconvenience caused to those already entered for these events.

Here is the updated list of our dates for the remainder of 2025 - entries are now open:

Why don't we run more events?

Our first session of racing for 2025 ended on Friday 14th February, a week before the British National Track Cycling Championships take place at the National Cycling Centre. Our second session is scheduled to begin on Friday 3rd October 2025 (subject to confirmation).

We have been asked why we don't run more events and continue into March, well the simple answer is that it is down to economics.

In common with many cycling events we have seen a decline in the number of entries in recent years and this - coupled with the continuing escalation of our running costs (currently £550 per week in venue hire and first aid fees alone and set to increase further this year) - means that we cannot afford to run at a loss.

MRTL, the UK’s longest established indoor track racing league, doesn't currently have any sponsors and we rely entirely on registration and entry fees to finance our racing events. Entry numbers always fall off after the National Championships as nights get lighter and the domestic road racing calendar gets underway.

So if you - or an organisation you are involved with – would like to help ensure the continuation of our events through sponsorship or financial support we would welcome the opportunity to see how we could work together! Please contact us HERE.

Registration & Entry Fees 2025

MRTL doesn't currently have any sponsors and we rely entirely on registration and entry fees to finance our racing events. We try to keep these charges as low as possible and haven't increased our weekly entry fees for several years.

In common with many cycling events we have seen a decline in the number of entries in recent years and this - coupled with the continuing escalation of our running costs (currently £550 per week in venue hire and first aid fees alone) - means we have had to revise our fees for 2025 in order for the track league to continue.

Premier and First Division leagues incorporated

With effect from the week commencing 7th November 2023, Manchester Regional Track League will move to a single event taking place on a Friday evening and incorporating both Premier and First Division leagues.

Based on the number of entries spread across both leagues in recent years, it has become financially unsustainable to continue to offer two separate nights of racing. The organising committee have therefore decided that a single weekly event is the best way to secure the continuation of the Track League.

A revised programme will continue to offer all riders the best racing opportunities, and we will maintain a separate points structure and overall standings for each league.

This website and the British Cycling online entry system have been updated to reflect these changes.

We look forward to welcoming all riders to our first combined event which will take place on Friday 10th November 2023, starting at 7.30pm

If you wish to do this please ensure that you are already registered for 2023 before coming to the track, you can do this here. If paying by cash it would help us if you could bring the correct amount, current fees are here.

You can only ride in the Division in which you are registered, so Premier Division riders can not enter First Division events and vice versa.
